This is PADI's entry level scuba certification course and one of the most popular in the world. Upon successful completion of this course, will gain fundamental owledge and skills necessary to dive safely with a buddy and independent of an instructor supervision, to a depth no greater than 18 metres. The course is divided into three (3) modules:
1. Knowledge Development (KD). Ocean Elements will provide each student diver with an original PADI Open Water manual for their independent study. Independent study means learning on your own, in the comfort of your own home and at your own time and pace. Students will then view the PADI Open Water DVD and review what they have learnt with our instructors. Quizzes will be given from time to time to gauge the students' grasp of the subjects they have learnt. Before certification, students complete the Open Water Final Exam. No sweat!
2. Confined Water (CW). Student divers learn and practice the basic skills of scuba diving in a confined water environment e.g. a swimming pool or in shallow water. They also get the chance to put into practice what they have learnt during the KD session and from watching the DVD. There are five (5) CW modules and these are usually achieved or completed during two (2) sessions, each about 3 hours long (depending on the class size). It's a breeze!
3. Open Water (OW). Student dives complete their course by completing four (4) Open Water dives i.e. dives conducted at sea or in a lake, to a depth no greater than 18 metres. During OW dives, students will once again demonstrate to their instructor the skills that they have learnt and practiced during the CW sessions. Nothing new here!
Before completing the Open Water course, student divers will also show their water skills to the instructor by performing either:
- A 200 metre continuous swim, OR
- A 300 metre snorkelling swim (wearing mask, snorkel and fins) and a 10 minute float/swim.
